What Most People Get Wrong
They measure the bag — not the bag with stuff in it.
A carry-on might measure 21" × 14" × 9" empty. But once you pack it full, soft sides bulge, zippers strain, and suddenly that 9" depth becomes 10" or 11". That is when it does not fit in the sizer.
Rigid and semi-rigid bags hold their shape better. You know the dimensions before you pack, and they stay the same after.
Personal Item vs. Carry-On: Know the Difference
Most airlines let you bring two bags into the cabin:
- Carry-on: Goes in the overhead bin. Usually around 22" × 14" × 9".
- Personal item: Goes under the seat in front of you. Usually around 18" × 14" × 8".
Budget carriers like Spirit and Frontier technically allow both, but a carry-on often comes with an extra fee unless you buy a higher fare class. That makes your personal item the only truly "free" bag on those airlines.
